Notes

Peter H. Bryce served as Chief Medical Officer of Canada’s Federal Departments of the Interior and Indian Affairs 1904-1921, dealing with health in both First Nations and immigrant communities. This volume presents a glowing account of immigration’s value following Bryce’s 1928 tour of western Canada. The first chapters discuss early immigration to Canada and recount an interview with Sir Clifford Sifton – former Minister of the Interior, and a promoter of immigration. Chapters 3-10 describe the lives and livelihoods of eastern European immigrants in western Canada, ranging from Manitoba’s Interlake to British Columbia’s Kootenay Valley. The final chapters address education and law in immigrant communities. Throughout, Bryce depicts “new Canadians” as industrious, law-abiding citizens whose presence in western Canada has clear economic benefits for the country. No publication date indicated, but Bryce’s return from his tour necessitates a publication date of 1928 or later. Peel(3) 5219.
