Douglass A. McRae traces the history of Steele's Scouts, beginning with the mounted corps lead by Major Samuel Steele during the 1885 North-West Resistance as part of the Alberta Field Force, before examining the formation of the commemorative troop established in 1977. The greater part of the volume is devoted to the modern organization, its origins, membership, training, uniforms, public appearances, and efforts to recreate the traditions of the original scouts. Illustrated throughout with photographs of the commemorative militia, the book records its activities and the individuals involved.
