Notes

For sixteen years after Alberta’s 1905 entrance into Confederation, the Liberal Party governed the province. In 1921, however, the three-term Liberals were voted out of office and never regained power. In this volume, Canadian historian and academic L. G. Thomas explores the causes that resoundingly swept the Liberals into and out of power, as well as political currents and controversies in the province from 1905-1921. Thomas sets the stage by examining the electoral climate in the North-West prior to Confederation. He then analyzes provincial governance in relation to major challenges, ranging from internal scandals (such as the Alberta and Great Waterways Railway initiative) to external conflicts (such as WWI). Includes ample endnotes and an index.
