Notes

George Henry Hambley (1896-1983) was a United Church minister who served congregations in Manitoba and Ontario from 1925 to 1971. He also wrote four histories of districts and towns in which he worked. This volume contains a history of the area Basswood and Minnedosa (north of Brandon, Manitoba) from the 1870s to 1970. Hambley begins with the signing of Treaty 2 in 1871, then traces the arrival of European homesteaders, the founding of both towns, the development of agriculture and emergence of infrastructure/services (including churches), and the participation of locals in both World Wars. The volume collects anecdotes and conversations from many sources, dividing them into short topical chapters. Includes index [index pagination does not match entries’ appearance in the text “due to changes made by the author” (p.431)].
