Notes

This volume contains genealogical records compiled by Douglas N. Sprague and Ronald P. Frye pertaining to the Métis inhabitants of the Red River settlement in the nineteenth century. The information comes from Canadian government records, census returns, Dominion Land Survey material, Hudson’s Bay Company records, and parish registers. Sprague and Frye organize this information into six charts: “Genealogies of Red River Households, 1818-1870,” “Family Size, Personal Property, and Geographical Location of Landowners, 1835”, “Contract Employees of the HBC Recruited From or Retired to the Red River Colony 1821-1870,” “Geographical Location and Children of Manitoba Families, 1870,” “Recognition of River Lot Occupants by the Government of Canada,” and “Dispersal and Relocation of the Manitoba Metis.” Sprague's introduction traces the history of the Red River settlement, the relationship between the Métis and the HBC, and conflicts between the Métis and the Canadian government.
