Notes

This exhibition catalogue covers a Mendel Art Gallery (Saskatoon, SK) show celebrating the Emma Lake Artists' Workshops. Between 1955 and 1995, the annual workshops attracted Canadian and international artists and students. The exhibit focussed on five pivotal workshops led by Canadian painter Jack Shadbolt (1955), American painter Barnett Newman (1959), American art critic Clement Greenberg (1962), American painter and sculptor Michael Steiner (1969), and German-born artist Friedel Dzubas and American curator John Elderfield (1979). The book contains b/w pictures and color plates of art created by artists in attendance at the workshops. An Introduction by exhibition organizer Jack O'Brian and five critical essays detail the Workshops' importance for Canadian art.
