Notes

Canadian North-West Historical Society Publications Vol. 1 No. 6. The Canadian North-West Historical Society was founded in 1924 (as the Battleford Historical Society) to preserve the Battleford area’s history, in part by publishing accounts of life in the region prior to 1890. In this volume, J. Stuart MacDonald (an Inspector of the Government’s Telegram Service) details the construction of the Dominion Telegraph line between Manitoba and Edmonton in the 1870s, arguing that its role in changing the North-West rivaled that of the NWMP or the Canadian Pacific Railway. He also highlights the telegraph’s importance during the 1885 North-West Resistance. Includes an introduction by Saskatchewan Premier J. T. M. Anderson, appendices recounting line inspections and Alfred von Lindeburgh’s life as a telegraph operator near Qu’Appelle, and a 23 x 27 cm (9 x 10.5 in) fold-out map. Peel(3) 5461.
