The Cypress Hills : An Island By Itself

An expanded edition of the authors’ earlier publication, The Cypress Hills: The Land and Its People. The book provides a comprehensive history of the Cypress Hills region of southwestern Saskatchewan and southeastern Alberta, covering its archaeology and prehistory, the history of First Nations and Métis peoples, the buffalo hunt, the fur and pemmican trade, the whiskey trade of “Whoop-Up Country,” and the arrival of the North West Mounted Police in 1874. Particular attention is given to the 1873 Cypress Hills Massacre of a Nakoda camp, the subsequent establishment of Fort Walsh, Treaty 4 negotiations, and the later history of the Nakoda people, including the relocation of their reserve.
