Notes

"Katharina (Janzen) Epp (b. 1868) began writing her diaries at age 51 following the death of her husband, Gerhard Epp, farmer and well-loved minister of Eigenheim Church. Her oldest two childern, Katharina (Tina) Plett and Gerhard, were already married with young families of their own, while the remaining seven offspring ranged in age from 22 (David ) to 10 (Elizabeth). During the two and a half decades covered by diaries, we see the remaining children grow up marry, and establish their own families. Up until the last year of her life, Katharina Epp faithfully recorded her many daily activities of housework and gardening, attending church functions, visiting the sick and elderly, and helping to care for her numerous grandchildren in countless ways. The effects of events taking place in the broader world - the aftermath of World War I, changes in church organizations, crop failure, and the Great Depression, conscription for World War II - are also observed."
