Notes

Edward Porritt was an English author and editor whose work focused on trade and governance in Canada and Great Britain. Two of his books – 1908’s “Sixty Years of Protection in Canada 1846-1908” and 1911’s “The Revolt in Canada Against the New Feudalism” – discuss British trade law as it pertained to protectionism and Canadian industries at the turn of the century. This volume contains selections by Annie G. Porritt from both books revised to appeal to Canadian – rather than British – readers. The volume covers topics such as free trade movements, tariffs, reciprocity with the United States, and John A. MacDonald’s National Policy. Two chapters near the end of the book focus on prairie grain growers’ responses to government decisions concerning protectionism and free trade.
