Notes

Canadian author James Stevens worked as a counselor and educator in northwest Ontario, developing an interest in the region’s stories, history, and culture. After meeting Cree artist Carl Ray, Stevens travelled to Sandy Lake to record legends and stories of the Sandy Lake Cree as told by Ray. The volume opens with a brief overview of the Sandy Lake Cree’s history and culture, followed by more than 70 tales. Stories range from accounts of humankind’s creation to explanations of animal behaviors to cautionary tales. Many stories involve the trickster figure Wisakedjak. Ray’s illustrations appear throughout.
