Notes

17-year-old Neil Stonechild’s 1990 death catalyzed an examination of potential racism and race-related violence in Saskatchewan policing. Conducted in the wake of three similar deaths of First Nations individuals in the province in the early 2000s, Wright’s inquiry gathers and analyzes evidence to piece together Stonechild’s activities on his last night alive, his arrival and treatment in police custody, and death by hypothermia after being released on the outskirts of Saskatoon. The volume reviews evidence and testimonies from Stonechild’s relatives/acquaintances and members of the Saskatoon Police Service. Wright also analyzes earlier investigations into Stonechild's death. The volume concludes with a list of recommendations (centered on race relations training and racial representation in policing) and lengthy appendices (containing witness lists, photos, copies of documents, and transcripts of court rulings).
