Notes

Canadian North-West Historical Society Publications Vol. 1 No. 2. The Canadian North-West Historical Society was founded in 1924 (as the Battleford Historical Society) to preserve the Battleford area’s history, in part by publishing accounts of life in the region prior to 1890. This volume contains memoirs of Father Louis Cochin, a French Catholic priest who staffed a mission on Poundmaker’s reserve in the 1880s. Cochin offers an eyewitness account of major events (such as the Battle of Cut Knife) and figures (such as Poundmaker) in the 1885 Cree uprising and North-West Resistance. The volume also includes Father Bigonesse’s brief memoir of encountering Cochin during the Resistance, a transcript of Cochin’s remarks at Poundmaker’s trial, a commentary on Poundmaker by Cochin, and a brief biography of Cochin. Text in English and French.
