Notes

This slim volume (part of the Gabriel Dumont Institute’s “Métis Historical Booklet” series) summarizes the acts of political resistance undertaken by Métis groups in the Red River area following the British government’s decision to sell Rupert’s Land and the North-West Territory to Canada in the late 1860s. In particular, the book describes (first) the formation of the National Committee of the Métis and (later) several Provisional Governments, as well as negotiations between these entities and the Canadian government. Excerpts from period documents and relevant secondary sources appear throughout the text.
