Notes

This volume contains pragmatic advice for preparing community histories in western Canada. It consists of transcriptions of presentations at two workshops organized by Brandon University’s Rural Archives and Community Resource Centre held in 1977 and 1978. Meant to educate and encourage individuals interested in organizing local histories, the panelists discuss the process from inception to publication. The first speakers discuss methods for gathering information from local residents, newspapers, and archives. The next panelists present strategies for compiling, editing, and typing the gathered material. Brief sections on securing funding, working with a printer (this panel led by David Friesen of Friesen’s Corporation), and distributing the finished product follow. The panelists' perspectives range from professional to anecdotal, and panels include academics, historians, booksellers, publishers, and veterans of community history committees.
