Notes

This large book (22 x 28.5 cm; 8.5 x 11 in) contains more than 130 aerial photos of Western Canadian farms and towns taken by Howdy McPhail in the 1950s and early 1960s. In addition to providing a visual record of civic growth and rural homesteads, the photos capture individuals and communities amidst everyday life – couples wave at the passing plane, neighbours chat on the street, and livestock sales occur. Western Canadian historian Bill Waiser’s biography of McPhail (with its own set of photos from McPhail’s life) intersperses the aerial photographic images.
