Notes

Augustana College Press Monograph Series No. 4. This volume contains an English translation of P. R. Kaufman’s 1931 “Unser Volk And Seine Geschichte,” a history of Swiss-Mennonite migration from the Ukraine to the central United States in the 1800s. The volume opens with an overview of Swiss Mennonite migrations across Europe to escape religious persecution, followed by descriptions of Mennonite life and society in the Ukraine. The book then recounts the travel experiences of immigrating families and the establishment of Swiss Mennonite churches/settlements in states such as South Dakota, Kansas, and Oklahoma. The volume tells these stories through firsthand accounts, essays by several contributors (F. C. Ortmann, Peter J. Albrecht, John J. Gering), and poetry and songs. A focussed, collaborative cultural history of Swiss Mennonite migration.
