Notes

Ethel Burnett Tibbits was a newspaper owner/editor from British Columbia. In this volume, she presents Albert McCarty’s stories of life in western Canada in the late 1800s and early 1900s as told by McCarty to his daughter, Margo McCarty Maxwell. Originally published in 1953, McCarty’s memoirs trace his family’s westward journey in search of land from Ontario (Meaford) to Manitoba (Clinton), then on to Alberta (Nanton), and finally British Columbia (Vancouver and Narrows Arm). Alongside his own experiences and adventures, McCarty recounts stories told to him by friends and relatives. From couples who fell in love while shut-in by a blizzard to suspicious grain elevator fires set by employees overcome by gambling debts, the volume’s stories range from humorous to tragic. Throughout, McCarty’s storytelling is detailed and engaging.
