Notes

Ed Dobbyn – a farmer and member of the Swan River Historical Society – began researching rodeos as part of his 1984 book “Lasting Impressions: Historical Sketches of the Swan River Valley.” Eventually, the stories that Dobbyn collected grew large enough to warrant the present volume. In this book, he presents anecdotes and histories relating to rodeos and stock shows on the Canadian prairies as well as the individuals and groups that organize the events. While much of the information comes from the Swan River Valley area, major events (like the Calgary Stampede) and important figures (like Cliff Claggett) intersperse accounts of local families and small-scale roundups to represent Alberta and Saskatchewan in addition to Manitoba. From runaway horses to fireworks shows gone wrong, Dobbyn has gathered good-natured and personal stories to celebrate prairie rodeo culture. Includes index.
