Notes

William Lyon Mackenzie King (MP for Prince Albert, Saskatchewan 1926-1945) was Canada’s longest serving Prime Minister. King's first appointments as Prime Minister occured 1921-1926 and 1926-1930, and his final 13-year term began in 1935. This booklet contains transcripts of three addresses King broadcast over radio during the 1935 campaign. King’s major criticisms focus on Conservative Prime Minister R. B. Bennett’s handling of the economy during the Great Depression. King reminds listeners of the country’s comparative prosperity under his Liberal government in the 1920s, and points to signs of the country’s rising confidence in Liberal candidates. In a striking segment, King references European political trends (from Hitler’s rise in Germany to communism’s growth in Russia) as harbingers of the dangers of electing his political opponents.
