Notes

Joan Soggie is a Saskatchewan author who has written two historical works concerning her home community of Elbow (in Cree, "Aiktow") and one novel set on the prairies. In “Looking for Aiktow,” Soggie traces the comings and goings of people through the Aiktow Valley (now submerged beneath Lake Diefenbaker), particularly in the past 200 years. Each of the volume’s chapters addresses a particular time period, figure, or event, crafting a broad historical picture with self-contained vignettes. From clashes between Cree and Blackfoot groups in the 1850s to Elbow’s evolution from a farming community to a tourist destination in the late 1900s, Soggie chronicles the changes and challenges faced by Indigenous and immigrant peoples in the area over time. Includes endnotes and bibliography.
