Notes

Published shortly before his death in 1979, this volume recounts Kamil Pecher’s 600 mile solo kayak journey through northern Saskatchewan in the 1970s. Pecher’s journey of endurance and self-discovery includes wrong turns, dangerous rapids, a sasquatch, and – part way through – an emergency evacuation due to illness. Amidst descriptions of his journey through pristine wilderness, Pecher reflects on changes and developments in Canada’s North, differences between First Nations and settler approaches to life, and his own self-identity. Throughout, his enthusiasm for kayaking, passion for Saskatchewan’s wilderness, and determination to challenge and understand himself shines.
