Notes

Saskatchewan Museum of Natural History Popular Series No. 12. In the early 1960s, Thomas Kehoe served as Provincial Archaeologist of Saskatchewan and as a curator at the Saskatchewan Museum of Natural History (now, Royal Saskatchewan Museum). In this slim booklet, he describes boulder effigies – stones arranged on the ground or piled to depict animals or people – found in Saskatchewan. Kehoe discusses the effigies’ placement and construction, describes their excavation and dating, and comments on their widespread presence on the North American prairies. He also outlines the role of depicted animals in First Nations mythology and summarizes certain events commemorated by Indigenous stone monuments. No publication date indicated, but Kehoe’s departure from the Museum following Saskatchewan’s 1964 election makes a publication date of 1964 or earlier likely.
