Notes

This volume collects stories of homesteading in the Lloydminster area (on the Saskatchewan/Alberta border) in the early 1900s. The book consists of nearly 30 succinct histories written by – or about – early residents of the Lloydminster area. Some contributors reminiscence about prairie life, others profile an individual or family, and still others recount a particular event or occasion. From Christian clergy refusing to swear at wayward oxen to barn fires started by lightning, the book’s stories reveal the challenges and adventures faced by European immigrants who arrived on the prairies with little farming experience. Throughout, the authors leaven moments of determination and struggle with humour.
