Notes

Alan Sturley Nunn (1874-1946) was a British fur trader who trapped in northern Saskatchewan and Manitoba in the early 1900s. Nunn’s amateur photography offers a visual record of trapping in the Lac La Ronge region, the lives and livelihoods of the Woodland Cree he worked near, and the area’s Christian missions (including All Saints [Lac La Ronge] Indian Residential School). Graham MacDonald’s commentary contextualizes Nunn’s life, highlighting the uniqueness and importance of his photography. Nunn worked near the end of the fur trade - changing laws, fashion trends, and fur companies rendered his trapping experience far different than that of better-known nineteenth century traders. His pictures also document the rise of Canada's Indian Residential School system in the area.
