Notes

From the Transactions of the Royal Society of Canada, Third Series, Section II, Volume XXXI. Arthur S. Morton was a professor of History at the University of Saskatchewan as well as the University’s Librarian. In this article, he attempts to trace the histories of four early fur traders in the North-West who formed partnerships with one another: Forrest Oakes, Charles Boyer, Joseph Fulton, and Peter Pangman. Drawing on archival records, Morton describes their movements, business dealings, and interactions with better-known figures and posts. Due to a scarcity of references to the four traders in available sources, Morton’s conclusions sometimes takes the form of hypothesis or conjecture, demonstrating the challenges of early fur trade research.
