A work of historical fiction based on the life of the author's mother, Helena Wiens. Drawing on family recollections, diaries, and documented historical events, Nettie Kroeker follows Helena's life from her childhood in Russia through marriage, emigration to Manitoba, and the experiences of establishing a home and raising a family in the Mennonite settlements of southern Manitoba. The narrative concludes with the death of Helena's first husband. Members of Helena Wiens's immediate family appear under their own names, while a number of secondary characters are fictional.
