Notes

During William Bleasdell Cameron’s career in the fur trade and work as an author in the North-West (best known for “The Trail of Big Bear”/“Blood Red the Sun”), he witnessed major changes and conflicts as Europeans encountered First Nations groups. When he passed away in 1951, Cameron left behind a trunk of manuscripts factually and fictively chronicling the North-West. This volume combines reprinted material with selections from those unpublished writings on the fur trade, the North-West Mounted Police, the Frog Lake Massacre, and First Nations and Métis peoples. Cameron’s writing is lively, detailed, and ranges from casual ethnographic studies to action-packed accounts of the North-West Resistance. A biography of Cameron and section introductions contextualize the texts selected.
