Notes

This volume contains a reprint of a 1964 printing of Treaty 6, an agreement negotiated and signed in 1876 by representatives of the Canadian government and leaders of First Nations groups in what is now Saskatchewan and Alberta. Like previous numbered treaties, Treaty 6 required First Nations groups to surrender their lands in exchange for reserves, educational facilities, agricultural assistance, and an annuity for each person. Treaty 6 also includes unique clauses concerning agricultural assistance and medical aid negotiated by Ahtahkakoop, Peter Erasmus, and Poundmaker. The government’s failure to effectively uphold its obligations under Treaty 6 was one of the catalysing causes for First Nations participation in the North-West Resistance. An important document in the history of western Canada.
