Notes

A study of political culture and electoral rhetoric in the three Prairie provinces. Drawing upon more than eight hundred campaign platforms, speeches, and election documents, Wesley examines how dominant political parties in Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba helped shape and perpetuate distinct provincial political identities throughout the twentieth century. He argues that successful parties reinforced enduring political "codes" through their campaign messaging: freedom in Alberta, security in Saskatchewan, and moderation in Manitoba. Through analyses of leaders including William Aberhart, Tommy Douglas, and Gary Doer, the book explores the relationship between political discourse, electoral success, and the persistence of regional political cultures on the Canadian Prairies.
