Notes

The first volume of Nellie L. McClung's autobiography, recounting her life from childhood in Ontario through her family's move to the Manitoba frontier and ending with her early years as a rural schoolteacher. Drawing on personal recollection, McClung describes pioneer settlement, family life, schooling, community and church activities, and the development of her interests in writing, temperance, and public affairs. The volume provides a first-hand account of life in western Canada during the late nineteenth century and traces the experiences that preceded her later work as an author, suffragist, and politician.
