Notes

In 1972, Canada’s National Museum of Man (now, Canadian Museum of History) established the Mercury Series to publish scholarship related to the Museum’s divisions. This volume (History Division Paper No. 10) contains 13 articles initially presented by Canadian academics at a 1974 University of Winnipeg conference on Canadian urban history. Edited by two University of Winnipeg history professors, the articles explore social, political, and economic issues that shaped the growth of cities like Winnipeg, Edmonton, Calgary, and Moose Jaw. From choosing townsites to strengthening civic bonds through sports teams to enacting racism in business dealings, the articles cast a broad, critical eye over the history of urban centres on the Canadian prairies. Articles include endnotes.
