Notes

The first volume in Wayne G. Broehl, Jr.'s history of Cargill, Incorporated. This thick book chronicles Cargill's origins and early growth, covering the tenures of its first three Presidents: William W. Cargill, John H. MacMillan, Sr. , and John H. MacMillan, Jr. The history spans approximately 100 years, running from the 1860s to 1960 (Broehl, Jr.'s second and third volumes, published in 1994 and 2008, cover the company's history beyond 1960). Since Cargill's leadership passed from father-in-law to son to son, Broehl, Jr. weaves together corporate history and family biography using archival sources, including correspondence between Cargill and MacMillan family members.
