Buffalo

A collected volume of scholarly essays examining the natural and cultural history of the North American bison, with particular reference to Alberta and the northern plains. Topics include paleontology and evolution; relationships between bison and Indigenous peoples; Blackfoot buffalo jumps and the Head-Smashed-In site; Métis involvement in the decline of the plains buffalo; artistic and literary representations, including the work of Clarence Tillenius; conservation and management of wood bison; ecological studies of wolves and bison in Wood Buffalo National Park; and disease issues such as tuberculosis and brucellosis. Additional essays address contemporary debates concerning northern bison and Indigenous communities.
