Notes

The author writes in the Preface to the First Edition, " This work is intended to serve a variety of audiences. So that it may be useful to laypersons interested in learning, or at least learning about, the Blackfoot language, the first few chapters are written in a different style from the later, more technical sounding chapters, which, it is hoped, provide a relatively painless introduction to many of the necessary technical terms utilized in those later chapters. ...The language here referred to as 'Blackfoot' is that spoken on three Southern Alberta reserves : Siksika (aka Blackfoot), centered about one hundred kilometers east-southeast of Calgary : Blood [aka Kainaa], covering a large area between Cardston and Lethbridge ; and Piikani (aka Peigan) [Aapatohsipit(i)kani], west of Fort MacLeod. It is also spoken on the Blackfeet [Aamskaapipi(i)kani] reservation in Northwestern Montana. ..."
