Notes

Cover titled Blackfoot Confederacy: Ancient and Modern. Title page reads Kainai Chieftainship: History, Evolution and Culture of the Blood Indians; Origin of the Sun-Dance. Written by the Venerable Archdeacon S. H. Middleton, long-time principal of St. Paul’s Residential School on the Blood Reserve, at the request of Chief Shot-On-Both-Sides and the Council of the Blood Indians (Blackfoot Confederacy). The work was prepared to record aspects of Kainai history and tradition and to compile a list of honorary chiefs admitted to the band; Middleton himself was named an honorary chief under the name Chief Mountain. Chapter 13, “Blackfeet Crafts,” is credited to John C. Ewers.
