Frederick Ings, came to the Western Canada, from Prince Edward Island in 1882, settling in the Highwood region of what is now Alberta. In 1883 he started the Rio Alto Ranch, as time passed he established the Midway Ranch were Macleod Trail crossed Mosquito Creek - the mid point between Fort Macleod and Fort Calgary. Confined to his home by ill health, Ings dictated this firsthand account of life spent on the range to his wife. It was completed in 1936.
