Notes

Published shortly before his death, Albert L. Mewis’ autobiography recollects adventure, adversity, and change over the course of his lifetime as a Saskatchewan farmer and political figure. Mewis’ stories follow a pattern of comings and goings: first his parents’ arrival and homesteading in Canada in the early 1900s, then his own childhood and school days in southern Saskatchewan in the 1920s, next his recruitment and service in the Canadian Army during World War II, and finally his return from Europe and career farming in Saskatchewan. Mewis also describes his work for the Saskatchewan Liberal party (including managing campaigns for George Gordon Leith in the 1960s and early 1970s). Congenial, modest, and detail-filled, Mewis’ recollections offer a frank account of reintegrating into civilian life after World War II, as well as the challenges of farming with family on the Canadian prairies.
