Notes

In 1885, Charles Bremner was captured by Chief Poundmaker near Battleford and, after Poundmaker’s surrender to General Middleton, held in Middleton’s custody for treason. Upon release Bremner returned to Battleford to rebuild his life, only to discover that Middleton had confiscated the furs that constituted Bremner’s financial capital. Margaret Stobie chronicles Bremner’s protracted battle to regain his furs, culminating in Middleton’s resignation and Bremner’s financial compensation. In Stobie’s hands, Bremner’s ordeal provides insight into leaders of both Métis and Canadian militia in the North-West. Her work discusses Indigenous-settler relations, negotiations and conflicts during the North-West Resistance, and Canadian legal/political process in the 1880s. Includes endnotes and bibliography.
