Notes

Born in Ahtahkakoop First Nation (Saskatchewan), Freda Ahenakew was an author, academic, linguist, and founder of the Saskatchewan Indian Languages Institute. In this volume, Ahenakew provides a grammatical introduction to Cree languages. With examples, tables, and charts, she explains how to modify Cree nouns, verbs, and particles in various syntactic constructions. Throughout, Ahenakew stresses the use of texts when learning Cree – the book utilizes excerpts (phrases, sentences, words) from her 1987 edited collection of Cree stories “wâskahikaniwiyiniw-âcimowina” [Stories of the House People]. An often-reprinted tool for teaching and learning Cree grammar.
