Notes

During World War II, nearly 91,000 men from Saskatchewan—almost 10% of the province’s population—served in the armed forces. More than 3,800 never returned. In tribute to their sacrifice, the Saskatchewan government named thousands of geographic features—lakes, islands, and bays—after these fallen soldiers.

Since 1997, pilot and photographer Doug Chisholm has flown across the province to capture aerial images of these remote, often forgotten memorials. In this powerful volume, a selection of Chisholm’s photographs is paired with moving stories by Gerald Hill, drawn from interviews with the families and friends who remember these young men. Also included is a complete list of Saskatchewan’s war dead and the locations named in their honour—together forming a lasting tribute etched into both land and memory.
