“Frontier Farewell” marks a turning point in author and lawyer Garrett Wilson’s literary output. Shifting his focus from law/politics to Great Plains history, Wilson characterizes the 1870s as a decade of irreversible change on the North American prairies as homesteaders carved the land into farms, towns and infrastructure sprung up, and First Nations groups dealt with both the arrival of settlers and the departure of the buffalo. In particular, the book emphasizes clashes between Indigenous groups and settlers, as well as the detrimental effect of white settlement on First Nations ways of life.
