Notes

Founded in Toronto in 1869 by Timothy Eaton, the T. Eaton Company grew from a single dry-goods store into one of Canada’s best-known retail empires. Eaton’s pioneered fixed prices and money-back guarantees, reshaping how Canadians shopped both in store and through its famous mail-order catalogues that reached the most remote communities. For more than a century, the “Eaton’s catalogue” was a household staple. Changing retail trends led to the company’s decline, and its final stores closed in 1999.

While a substantial portion of the catalogue is devoted to apparel, its pages also advertise an extensive assortment of necessities for both the urban and rural household.
