Notes

GODWIN, Ted (1933–2013)
Canadian painter and educator, born in Calgary, Alberta. Trained at the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology and Art (1951–55), he worked in commercial art before joining the Faculty of Fine Art, University of Saskatchewan (Regina campus), where he taught from 1964 to 1985. A member of the celebrated “Regina Five,” Godwin was the youngest of the group that came to prominence with a 1961 National Gallery of Canada exhibition. He was made a Member of the Order of Canada and received both the Queen’s Silver and Diamond Jubilee Medals.

Initially associated with abstract expressionism, Godwin’s early work with the Regina Five established him as a leading figure in postwar Canadian art. His celebrated Tartan paintings of the late 1960s and 1970s explored intricate, interwoven grids of colour, while his later career saw a return to representational landscapes, notably of the Bow River. His work is represented in major Canadian collections.
