Notes

Grace Lee Nute (1895–1990) was an American historian best known for her studies of the fur trade, voyageurs, and the history of the northern borderlands of Minnesota and Ontario.

Written as a companion volume to The Voyageur's Highway, this work examines the history of the Rainy River district between Rainy Lake and Lake of the Woods. Nute traces the succession of peoples and industries that shaped the border country, including Indigenous communities, fur traders, prospectors, fishermen, lumbermen, settlers, and tourists.
