Notes

Rummel, Elizabeth (“Lizzie”) von (1897–1980). German-born Canadian mountaineer, ski guide, and lodge proprietor active in the Rocky Mountains. After emigrating to Alberta during the First World War, she later worked in the Banff and Mount Assiniboine as a guide and hostess, eventually establishing her own backcountry camp at Sunburst Lake. She was recognized for her long association with mountain tourism and guiding, and was appointed a Member of the Order of Canada.

This volume presents a full biography of Rummel’s life, tracing her upbringing in Europe, settlement in Alberta, and subsequent career in the Rocky Mountains. It covers her work in mountain lodges, guiding and climbing activities, the establishment and operation of her Sunburst Lake camp, and her later years documenting regional mountaineering history.
