Notes

Cheated examines the surrender of First Nations reserve lands in western Canada during the administration of Sir Wilfrid Laurier between 1896 and 1911. Drawing on archival records, government correspondence, and land transaction documents, the authors investigate more than two dozen reserve surrenders, including those of the Ocean Man and Pheasant Rump reserves in southeastern Saskatchewan. They examine the role of the Department of Indian Affairs, political patronage, land speculation, and government policy in the transfer of reserve lands, and discuss the subsequent federal inquiry into allegations of irregularities. With notes, bibliography, and index.
